AAPLOG is looking for medical and nurse midwifery students who desire to practice evidence-based as well as life-affirming healthcare at the service of all patients (born and preborn). The Hippocratic Academy is for medical trainees who recognize the irreplaceable value and worth of every human being from the moment of fertilization until natural death. Students who are interested in being leaders and advocates in their fields, are dedicated to helping return the medical profession to a life-affirming ethic, and who are interested in being a part of a nationwide alumni network throughout their career, are encouraged to apply. The Academy will encompass 3-4 years of training with 101, 201 and 301 courses as well as attendance at our national medical education conference (MBEC).
Equip medical and nurse midwifery students with the understanding and ability to articulate the medical evidence on the harms of induced abortion and the benefits of life-affirming medical care for patients.
Review the bioethical principles that physicians utilize when providing patient care and the impact those have on the profession of medicine long-term.
Define the true purpose of medicine and their responsibility as physicians to that purpose.
Develop a nationwide network of physicians who will lead in ensuring life-affirming medical care is not only available but also the standard of care through their individual practices (both private and academic), advocacy at the local, state and federal level, and by mentoring subsequent generations of medical professionals.
In addition to team building activities and outings in the DC area, the following courses will be a part of the Hippocratic Academy 101 Intensive:
- Pro-Life Apologetics: How to defend your pro-life position
- When Does Human Life Begin?
- What It Means to Be Human
- The Purpose of Medicine
- Fetal Pain: What does the science say?
- The Rise and Fall of the Hippocratic Oath
- First, Second, and Third Trimester Abortion Procedures
- Mifepristone – what does the data really say on safety?
- Legal Conscience and Religious Liberty Protections for Medical Professionals
- Pro-Life Laws and Their Impact on Patient Care
- Life-Affirming Care from Fertilization to Natural Eeath
- Impact of Induced Abortion on Women’s Health: Mental Health
- The Science of Abortion Pill Reversal
- Becoming a Good Leader: Character strength and emotional intelligence assessment
- and more…
Who Should Apply
Due to the cumulative and sequential nature of the Hippocratic Academy, applicants should be willing to commit to the entire Academy, which will involve a 5 day 101 intensive and 2-3 day 201 and 301 intensives in subsequent years of their training. The ideal time to start the Academy is in the summer before starting medical (or nurse midwifery) school or the summer between the first and second year (but we will accept any qualified student who can commit to completing the Academy).
Our selection committee will evaluate applicants based on commitment to life-affirming healthcare (as evidenced by essay responses and letters of recommendation), leadership capacity and academic achievement.
Components of Application
- Application Form (filled out online)
- Academic transcripts (undergraduate and graduate school thus far)
- Current CV
- Two letters of recommendation (for former Joe DeCook scholars, only one will be required)
- Two essay questions (answers submitted online) with each response being 500 words or less:
- What do leadership and advocacy in medicine look like to you?
- How do you plan to help return the medical profession to a life-affirming ethic through your medical training and future practice?
