AAPLOG’s Members Are Filing Comments to Stop the Late-Term Abortion Certification
CHICAGO – The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) has applied to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) for a new subspecialty certification for doing late-term abortions. The application for “Complex Family Planning” reveals ABOG desires to increase the number of board-certified OB-GYNS trained in doing second and third trimester abortions.
The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG), representing 4,000 members and associates, is filing comments opposing the late-term abortion certification. ABMS is holding a public comment opportunity on its website through July 6: https://www.abms.org/news-events/call-for-comment-new-subspecialty-certification-in-complex-family-planning.
“Abortion is not healthcare,” said Dr. Donna Harrison, Executive Director of AAPLOG. “OB-GYNS are trained to preserve and protect the lives of their patients, not destroy them. Even in difficult circumstances, OB-GYNS practice compassionate, ethical care that cares for two patients – mother and child. Late-term abortions are never necessary. Thanks to incredible advances in medical care, even unborn children in the second trimester are surviving early delivery in greater numbers than we’ve ever seen.
“ABOG’s proposed subspecialty certification in ‘Complex Family Planning’ is unneeded. The application includes areas in which OB-GYNS are already trained, like contraception, miscarriage management, family planning and management of complicated pregnancies. These agreeable areas in the application are simply a smokescreen; the focus is really to train doctors to destroy human life in second and third trimester abortions.
“As OB-GYNS, we should we advocating for the elimination of late-term abortions. The United States is radical on late-term abortion policy. Our nation is one of only seven countries to permit elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. There is strong support for banning abortions after 20-weeks, according to national polling.
“If ABOG continues to pursue late-term abortion training certification, it does so against the wishes of those in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Eighty-five percent of OB-GYNS do not do abortions in their practice. We encourage doctors to file a comment against ABOG’s late-term abortion training.”
