Pro-life Doctors Urge Colorado State Senate to Oppose Radical Abortion Policy

The bill, which seeks to secure the “fundamental right … to have an abortion”, threatens the safety and dignity of pregnant women and their preborn children.

(EAU CLAIRE, MI) March 17, 2022 – The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) is encouraging Colorado state senators to oppose the state’s House Bill 22-1279, known as the Reproductive Health Equity Act. The bill, which passed the state’s House on March 11 and is assigned to its Senate Judiciary Committee for a hearing today, prohibits state and local entities from implementing restrictions on abortions.

“By codifying abortion access at any point in pregnancy for any reason, this policy prioritizes access to abortion over the health and safety of women,” said Dr. Christina Francis, AAPLOG board chair. “This legislation would outlaw even those restrictions that hold bipartisan support and are shown to protect the lives and dignity of women.”

For example, under this bill, Colorado’s parental notification law would be eliminated, even though such a law prevents victims of sex trafficking from being forced to undergo coerced abortions, among other benefits. Also, the bill would ban restrictions on late-term abortions, which are never medically necessary and pose significant medical risks to women as well as ending the lives of pain-capable fetal human beings.

HB 22-1279’s unqualified opposition to abortion regulations also creates unequal protection for children born at different gestational ages.  A live birth can happen at any point between roughly 22 and 42 weeks’ gestation. Under this bill, a child born at 24 weeks has its right to life fully protected, but a 34-week baby that’s still in utero can be killed for any reason.

AAPLOG calls on Colorado legislators to focus on thoughtful solutions that recognize the need for the protection of all vulnerable lives involved.
