To educate the public about our harmful state abortion law and November ballot measure, and to build a team of life-affirming medical professionals, three Colorado medical professionals launched the first-in-the-nation state chapter of AAPLOG in April 2024. Since then, the Colorado chapter has joined with 50 other pro-life organizations, with two of our members representing the medial arm of âProlife Coloradoâ coalition on their board. Our chapter members are growing in number and impact. Besides representation in the coalition, we have had members publish op-eds and letters to the editors, participate in public education/presentations, host awareness events across the state, developed written media tips and strategies, and developed partnerships with other organizations. AAPLOG membership in Colorado has grown 50% this year!
On Sept. 24, our chapter hosted a special event, in Washington, DC, entitled, âThe Threat to Womenâs Health: Former Abortion Doctors Speak Outâ. (See story above!)
Colorado allows unrestricted abortion through the entire pregnancy, with no licensing, regulation, oversight, or accurate data reporting by abortion clinics. In addition, there are no clear training requirements for abortionists. Historically our state restricts the use of tax dollars for abortions. In 2023 the Colorado legislature passed a trio of bills, introducing a new term: âlegally protected health care activity,â and providing special protections for abortion providers and clinics (preparing for increasing abortion travel to Colorado), requiring private insurance to completely cover abortion and attack on pregnancy resource center as âdeceptive advertisingâ; with prohibition on Abortion Pill Reversal as punishable professional misconduct.
In November 2024, Colorado is facing a ballot initiative, âAmendment 79 Constitutional Right to Abortionâ, which seeks to enshrine our egregious abortion laws into the state Constitution, as are 9 other states. If passed, Amendment 79 would prevent any state or local government from creating laws that would âdeny, impede or discriminateâ against a womanâs right to abortion, removing any requirements for parental notification, as well as remove public funding prohibition.
We hope to pave the way, set an example, and be a resource for any other medical professionals that seek to establish a state chapter with AAPLOG. Whatever the results in November, it has been an amazing journey, if not a whirlwind. Reflecting back on what we have accomplished since our launch in April, we can encourage other states â it is do-able. Visit the AAPLOG CO webpage for more details on their chapter and work.
