On May 28, AAPLOG hosted a webinar titled “Pregnancy Loss Care in the Emergency Department.” The live event featured guest speaker Michaelene Fredenburg, LHD, President and CEO of the Institute for Reproductive Grief Care (IRGC).
In this webinar, Dr. Fredenburg offers an evidence-based overview of best practices for how the emergency department team can offer trauma-informed care to women and their partners who present with pregnancy loss. The talk reviews experiences and factors that may impede healthy grieving for parents who lose preborn babies, language medical professionals should use and avoid when speaking to these patients, and much more.
“As a board-certified OB/GYN and obstetric hospitalist, I get to serve women during some of the happiest days of their lives as they bring new babies into the world,” said AAPLOG CEO Dr. Christina Francis during the webinar. “But for the patients I see who are experiencing reproductive loss, I also have the honor of walking alongside them and offering them care, comfort, and hope during some of the worst days of their lives.”
“For patients undergoing such a tragedy, the quality of care that they get from medical staff in the emergency department will be remembered for the rest of their lives, for better or for worse, and will profoundly impact their mental and physical health,” Dr. Francis added. “It is of the utmost importance that we as medical professionals are equipped with the knowledge and resources to give them the best care possible.”
We are honored to have Dr. Fredenburg offer this valuable information to our members and followers. If you missed the talk, you can watch the replay here. It’s also available in the members-only portal.
