On November 18, the Black Life Collective hosted the first-ever Black Life Conference, sponsored by AAPLOG’s Medical Professionals of Color (MPOC) subsection. This virtual conference brought together eight prominent pro-life leaders of the Black community to speak on a variety of topics surrounding the theme “Affirming, Preserving, and Protecting Black Life in the 21st Century.” Speakers included Dr. Alveda King, PhD, founder of Alveda King Ministries and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Rev. Walter B Hoye II, Founder and President of the Issues4Life Foundation; and Catherine Davis, President of The Restoration Project. Presenters covered such broad topics as sex education, supporting mothers and fathers, and improving healthcare for the Black community.
Efforts to organize this conference were led by Dr. Anthereca Lane, MD, a board-certified OB-GYN, AAPLOG Board Member, head of our Medical Professionals of Color Subsection, and member of the Black Life Collective (a coalition of pro-life leaders committed to promoting life, health, and dignity in the Black community). In addition to organizing the conference and keeping it running as the emcee, Dr. Lane gave her own talk at the conference, titled “Affirming the Protection of Black Mothers: Why Maternal Mortality Is Relevant to the Conversation”. We are extremely proud of both Dr. Lane’s efforts at this conference and her contributions to the pro-life medical community, and we are honored to have been able to participate in this conference, which we hope will be the first of many.
