Our medical residents and students are the future of pro-life medicine.
Yet, as many of us know and have experienced, life-affirming healthcare is looked down upon, even discriminated against, in medical school and residency. AAPLOG wants to be a part of the solution and create innovative programs and initiatives to fill the gap that medical trainees are experiencing.
Launching this summer, AAPLOG proudly introduces the Hippocratic Academy, a new initiative for future physicians who want medicine to be life-affirming, not life-ending by treating death as a therapeutic modality.
The Hippocratic Academy is rooted in the timeless principles of the Hippocratic Oath, one of which is to “do no harm,” and designed to shape the next generation of physicians and give them the tools they need to have confidence in their pro-life position as well as to be able to winsomely and thoughtfully articulate the medical evidence that supports it. It will also be formational in their view of the purpose of medicine and our role in our patients’ lives. Critically, it will begin equipping them with these tools at the beginning of their medical journey.
This summer launches our first class of the Academy with a five-day “101” course. Subsequent 201 and 301 courses will then be offered during medical students’ 2nd and 3rd years of school. Our Hippocratic Academy students will also be given priority for scholarships to attend our national conference each year.
As we offer these courses each year, we will be building an essential alumni network that will allow these students to provide a support system for one another – throughout their training and beyond to help ensure that they stay committed to life-affirming medical care and have knowledge of where they can practice it.
The Hippocratic Academy will:
• Review the bioethical principles that physicians utilize when providing patient care and the impact those have on the profession of medicine long-term.
• Equip medical students with the ability to articulate the medical evidence on the harms of induced abortion and the benefits of life-affirming medical care for patients.
• Equip physicians to care for both patients, mother and child.
• Develop a nationwide network of physicians who will lead in ensuring life-affirming medical care.
