“As physicians who have provided care for families like the Coxes who received difficult diagnoses for their preborn children, our hearts go out to them for what they have been through. Families in this situation deserve accurate information about their child’s diagnosis – that pregnancies with potentially life-limiting fetal diagnoses can be carried to term without causing suffering or pain for their child. Additionally, many children with conditions previously considered to be uniformly lethal (such as Trisomy 18) can now survive when they receive excellent healthcare – and bring unexpected joy to all who know them. Unfortunately, all too often, families’ pain is exploited by pro-abortion advocates eager to promote abortion on demand – and to politicize healthcare at the expense of the vulnerable.
“Adverse prenatal diagnoses are not life-threatening for the mother. Pregnant women and their preborn children deserve care that respects their dignity and protects their health. Healthy mom and healthy baby should be the goal of every medical professional providing them care. Life-affirming physicians have always been able to give life-saving healthcare to both of our patients in every state and we still can, including in states with strong pro-life protections.
“The medical community needs to do a better job accompanying and supporting women receiving difficult prenatal diagnoses. It starts with setting aside politics and giving families accurate information that explains the resources available and recognizes the value of both patients’ lives – mother and child,” said Christina Francis, CEO of AAPLOG.
As a professional medical organization with thousands of members nationwide, AAPLOG is committed to supporting and providing life-affirming care for pregnant women and their children and providing accurate information about their healthcare.
