Dear ProLife Colleague, When is a fetus a human being? “The child by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth.” From UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Legislatively, in the United States, a number of states have passed legislation that recognizes the uborn child is a human being worthy of protection, at least at 20 weeks, and seeks to protect the baby’s life. And most people recognize the unborn child is a human from fertilization. Many just don’t feel it is a very important human being, and so can be “terminated” as desired (abortion on demand). Now comes the Canadian Medical Association reaffirming its denial of the humanity of unborn babies. Can you believe it??? http://europeanlifenetwork.blogspot.ie/2012/08/canadian-medical-association-deny.html Monday, August 20, 2012 The Vancouver Sun reports that the organization representing Canada’s doctors says life begins when a baby emerges from its mother’s womb. This approach is in a similar vein to that set out in an article by Peter Singer, http://europeanlifenetwork.blogspot.ie/2012/08/controversial-article-by-peter-singer.html which says that being human does not confer the right to life. Delegates to the Canadian Medical Association’s annual general council meeting last Wednesday supported retention of the section of the Canadian Criminal Code that declares a child becomes a human being at the moment of birth: The Canadian Criminal Code section declares a fetus becomes a human being “when it has completely proceeded, in a living state, from the body of its mother.” Excuse us—you mean with a foot still in the vagina, this is not a human being?? Please pardon a personal comment, but this reminds one of the classic line from a book of the world’s great literature (Paul’s letter to the Romans, l:22) “Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools….” We need to be diligent and unified lest this kind of nonsense become accepted dogma by America medical associations, and we need to support those Canadian doctors who stand for the sanctity of human life from its beginning.
