AAPLOG recently published a new educational resource: a one-pager about chemical abortion and its risks. It is the first of a series of short fact sheets titled “Just the Facts Sheets”. This resource contains a section summarizing its medical risks, current information about state-level laws, and an overview of abortion pill reversal. Chemical abortions now account for the majority of induced abortions in the U.S. They are typically accomplished with a two-drug regimen consisting of mifepristone followed by misoprostol. The former drug blocks the action of progesterone, depriving the developing embryo or fetus of essential nutrients and oxygen for survival. The latter causes uterine contractions that expel the embryo along with other pregnancy tissue. This drug combination is inaccurately touted as being as “safe as Tylenol”, a false narrative that has been used to justify removing important safeguards on chemical abortion, placing the health and safety of women and girls at risk.
We hope that this resource will prove useful to medical professionals, whether they are informing their patients about chemical abortion or relaying important facts to the public in their advocacy efforts. In this era, it is more important than ever that this information be accessible to the public.
If you are interested in becoming more active in your efforts to advocate for your patients, you can attend our upcoming expert witness training session in Charlotte, North Carolina on November 4. You can register for this event here. Additionally, feel free to check out our evidence-based committee opinions and practice guidelines for more in-depth treatments of a variety of life issues.
In the coming months, we will be releasing more of these one pager briefing sheets on relevant issues, distilling the pertinent medical evidence into key facts for you to use, whether it be when serving patients, in conversation with colleagues, or in defending life-affirming medicine in the media or in your state legislature.
