ReThink Pregnancy: A Physician-Led Effort to Reframe the Conversation

For too long, anti-life culture has permeated discussions of motherhood and women’s healthcare. Today, we’re hitting the reverse button.

In honor of Mother’s Day, AAPLOG and EveryLife, the leading pro-life diaper company, are launching ReThink Pregnancy, a national campaign grounded in science, inspired by stories from mothers themselves, and backed by physicians committed to restoring clarity about the full picture of pregnancy, not only the challenges, but also its many benefits.

EXPLORE RETHINK PREGNANCY

As AAPLOG members and life-affirming medical professionals, you are uniquely aware of the disconnect between cultural narratives and the realities seen in clinical practice. For decades, cultural and media discussions have framed pregnancy primarily in terms of risk, limitation, and pathology. Yet the science, and our shared experience at our patients’ bedsides, tell a far more nuanced and beautiful story.

Through this campaign, we are highlighting findings that many of you encounter regularly but that are often absent from patient-facing narratives, including:

  • Neuroplastic changes to a woman’s brain during pregnancy (“pregnancy brain”) that enhance bonding, empathy, and cognitive function
  • Evidence linking pregnancy and breastfeeding with reduced risks of certain cancers
  • The phenomenon of microchimerism and its potential role in tissue repair
  • The measurable ways pregnancy influences long-term health and behavior

These are not theoretical concepts, but rather clinically relevant insights that deserve wider attention.  And patients deserve to know this information, especially before becoming pregnant and at the beginning of their pregnancies.

In an age where women look for health resources on social media, AAPLOG and EveryLife are meeting them where they are. The campaign will drop one to two videos a week on our Instagram account (aaplog_) throughout the month of May, along with an infographic made for education and sharing.

The campaign features AAPLOG leaders and physicians, including Dr. Christina Francis, Dr. Kerri Brackney, and Dr. Anthereca Lane, alongside women who share their experience with pregnancy. Each video addresses a specific aspect of pregnancy that has been misunderstood or minimized, from so-called “pregnancy brain” to the broader physical and psychological transformations that occur during and after pregnancy.

Importantly, the goal is not to oversimplify or dismiss the challenges of pregnancy, but to present a complete and more accurate picture that reflects both its complexity and its strengths. As physicians, we are not only responsible for clinical care; we are also stewards of medical truth. Women deserve accurate and comprehensive information regarding their health, including pregnancy.

Ultimately, ReThink Pregnancy is an invitation to challenge prevailing assumptions, to elevate under-discussed science, to engage more intentionally in the cultural conversation surrounding women’s health, and to encourage women to be excited about having children and building healthy families.

We encourage you to explore the campaign, share its resources in your practice, and spread the word in conversation and on social media. Your voice is indispensable in these efforts, because as women’s healthcare professionals, we understand something critical:

When the full picture of pregnancy is presented, grounded in both science and experience, it changes the conversation towards life-affirming healthcare and empowers our patients.
